I entered the legal field over two years ago when I started working for Jasmine Daya. Being new in the field and having limited experience, the role of a legal assistant was both intriguing and challenging for me. I have been lucky to witness Jasmine’s work ethic firsthand, which is impeccable to say the least. She is genuinely committed to helping clients which in turn encourages me to model a similar work style.
My typical day at Jasmine Daya & Co. is often very busy because there is a lot to be done. When I begin my day, I start by checking my emails, responding to voicemail messages, and then prioritizing the most urgent tasks which I will aim to complete first. The rest of my day will consist of the more common duties of an assistant such as answering emails and calls, arranging court proceedings, and requesting records among other assignments.
Over time, I realized that my role at the firm was not as structured and repetitive as one may assume looking from the outside in. I believe that an overlooked responsibility in the job of a legal assistant is being the main point of contact for clients. Coincidentally, I consider this to be one of the most meaningful and valuable aspects of my job. The litigation process is often lengthy and court proceedings can be scheduled several months away. During this time, it is important for me to assure our clients that their file is moving forward by answering any questions or concerns that they may have and by providing them with updates. Speaking with clients on a day-to-day basis has allowed me to get to know the individual behind the file. I now understand that every client is different and each case is truly unique.
It is comforting to know that when I walk into work every morning, I am surrounded by our hard-working staff and talented lawyers who are committed to being the best advocates they can for our clients. As Jasmine Daya & Co. is a smaller firm, there is a notable sense of teamwork and proactive cooperation among the staff.
