Warmer Spring weather marks the return of motorcycle enthusiasts to roadways across Canada, and with it, a need to increase awareness about how to safely share roads with motorcyclists. The Ontario Provincial Police released that in about half of the reported motorcycle accidents, the drivers were not at fault.[1]
May is recognized as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, with a goal of reminding both motorcyclists and motorists to be aware of their surroundings, including checking blind spots, mirrors, safely changing lanes and avoiding distracted driving or driving while impaired.
Riders are encouraged to wear protective gear at all times, upkeep maintenance of their bikes, take defensive driving courses, and take the Motorcycle Safety Pledge organized by the Canadian Motorcycle & Moped Industry Council[2]. The Council organizes motorcycle safety events across Canada, where riders can learn about safety tips.
